With 130 million haematology tests performed annually in England, contributing to >70% of diagnoses, pathology contributes to the management of an overwhelming number of patients.

Diagnostic pathology impacts all areas of healthcare, particularly cancer. This can be considered as a virtually unique branch of diagnostic medicine that is capable of identifying malignant disease, as well as defining the cancer, stage and even the potential therapeutic vulnerability.

“Whatever happened to that patient….?” This is the question that our speaker, Dr Timothy Farren, is asked most often when a scientist has reviewed a blood film following an abnormal FBC result. If individuals are working within silos of their discipline, these questions may continue to play on their minds.
